B+ Mushrooms: Are They Strong or Just Overhyped?

B+ mushrooms are a strain of Psilocybe cubensis that people have been growing and using for decades.

No one really knows where they came from, but most people say a grower known as Mr. G created them.

He claimed B+ was a mix between two different mushroom species, but that part’s still up for debate—and most growers now agree it’s just a unique cubensis strain.

Some call it “B-plus,” others say “B-positive.”

Either way, it’s known for being easy to grow, handling rough conditions better than most, and producing big flushes. That alone has made it one of the most popular strains for beginners.

But there’s always been a debate around it. Some people say B+ gives a really warm, visual trip. Others say it’s nothing special and that the name is the only reason it’s still popular.

So, is B+ actually strong—or is it just another average cubensis with a catchy name? Let’s take a closer look.

Why Are B+ Mushrooms So Hyped?

B+ mushrooms have a big reputation—but not everyone agrees on why. Some say they’re hyped because of the name.

Others say it’s because they’re easy to grow and great for beginners. And then there are people who claim the trip feels smoother or “more positive” compared to other strains.

They’re less likely to get contaminated, colonize fast, and grow in a wide range of conditions. For many first-time growers, B+ was their entry into mushroom cultivation.

They also look impressive. That makes them satisfying to grow, especially if you’re just starting out.

Do they feel different than other strains?

Some people think so. You’ll see posts saying the B+ trip feels warmer, more visual, or more “spiritual.”

But others say it’s just another cubensis strain and that the trip depends more on your mindset, setting, and dose—not the strain itself.

It’s hard to say for sure because potency can change from batch to batch, even within the same grow. So unless it’s lab-tested, the experience might vary no matter what strain you’re using.

Is it all marketing?

Not exactly, but the name helps. “B-positive” sounds friendly and clean, way more appealing than something like “Albino Penis Envy.”

That alone makes it more approachable, especially for people new to psychedelics.

So, while B+ might not be the strongest or most unique strain, it got popular for a reason. It’s easy to grow, looks good, and has a name that people remember.

What Do B+ Mushrooms Look Like?

B+ mushrooms are known for being big; some grow over 11 inches tall.

Even the average ones are larger than most Psilocybe cubensis strains, which is part of why so many beginners like growing them. They just look impressive.

The caps can range from light to dark brown, depending on the conditions.

In warmer environments, they tend to show more of a golden-brown color, while cooler temps can give them a darker, caramel-like look. Most caps have a pointy tip or “nipple” right in the center, which is a classic B+ feature.

The stems are usually long, thick, and white or pale tan, with a slightly fibrous texture. They’re strong enough to hold up the big caps without falling over, which isn’t always the case with other strains.

And they bruise blue just like other psilocybin mushrooms.

You’ll see the blue marks mostly on the stem or edges of the cap after handling or cutting. The bruising is normal and shows that psilocybin is present.

How Strong Are B+ Mushrooms?

B+ mushrooms are considered mid-range when it comes to potency. They’re not the strongest Psilocybe cubensis strain out there, but they’re definitely not weak either.

If you’re used to Golden Teachers, B+ will feel pretty similar—maybe just a little stronger, depending on the batch.

What’s their potency level?

B+ mushrooms contain around 7.9 mg of psilocybin per gram of dried mushrooms.

That puts them slightly above average for most cubensis strains, which usually fall between 5 to 8 mg per gram. Still, like any mushroom, the strength can change based on how it was grown.

Are they stronger than Golden Teachers?

Not by much. Both strains are close in potency, but some people say B+ feels a bit more intense—more visuals, slightly deeper headspace.

It’s not a huge difference, but if you’re used to Golden Teachers, don’t be surprised if B+ hits a little harder at the same dose.

How much should you take?

Here’s a quick guide for dried B+ mushrooms:

  • Microdose: 0.1g – 0.3g
  • Light trip: 0.5g – 1.0g
  • Moderate trip: 1.5g – 2.5g
  • Strong trip: 3g – 3.5g
  • Heavy trip: 4g+ (not recommended unless you know what you’re doing)

If it’s your first time with B+, start low—1.5 to 2 grams is plenty for most people. You can always take more later, but you can’t un-take it once you’re in it.

What Does a B+ Mushroom Trip Feel Like?

People describe B+ as a visual and uplifting strain—but like with any mushroom, the trip depends a lot on your mindset, setting, and how much you take.

You’ll probably get open-eye visuals, color shifts, and patterning, especially if you’re outside or in a quiet space with low light.

At the same time, the body high tends to be relaxed and smooth, not jittery or overwhelming.

Some call it a “warm” trip—not super intense, but still deep if you go with a higher dose. Lower doses feel calm and floaty. Higher doses can take you into spiritual or introspective territory without being harsh.

How long does it last?

A B+ trip usually lasts around 4 to 6 hours, with the peak happening about 90 minutes to 2 hours in. After the peak, things taper off slowly.

You’ll feel mostly back to baseline by hour six, maybe a little dreamy or tired, depending on how the trip went.

Is B+ a Good Mushroom for Beginners?

Yes, B+ is one of the most recommended strains for beginners, and for good reason. It’s easy to grow, easy to find, and most people say the trip is manageable, even at moderate doses.

Since B+ falls in the middle range for potency, it’s not one of those strains where a small mistake sends you into deep space.

You still need to weigh your dose, of course—but the margin for error is a little more forgiving than with something like Penis Envy.

Can You Find B+ Mushrooms in the Wild?

Not really. B+ mushrooms don’t grow naturally in the wild—not like some of the other psilocybin species you can find in forests or woodchip beds. B+ is a lab-created strain, and it’s mostly found indoors, not out in nature.

Do they grow naturally?

No. B+ doesn’t pop up on its own in the wild.

It was likely developed by a cultivator (most say Mr. G), and it needs the right conditions and substrate to grow—stuff like brown rice flour, coco coir, or manure, none of which you’d randomly find in a forest.

If you do find them outside, it’s probably because someone was growing them nearby or they escaped from an outdoor grow. But even then, it’s rare.

You won’t find B+ growing in parks, mulch beds, or grassy fields like some wild species (P. cyanescens, for example).

How to Grow B+ Mushrooms?

B+ mushrooms are one of the easiest magic mushroom strains to grow. They colonize quickly, and don’t need anything fancy to thrive. If you’re just getting started, this is a great one to learn with.

Here’s how to do it step by step:

  1. Pick your grow method.
    • If you’re new, go with PF Tek using brown rice flour and vermiculite.
    • If you want bigger yields, try a monotub with coco coir or manure-based substrate.
  2. Get your supplies.
    • B+ spores (usually in a syringe)
    • Substrate materials (brown rice flour for PF Tek, or coco coir/manure for bulk grows)
    • Glass jars or plastic tubs
    • Spray bottle for misting
    • Micropore tape or filters for airflow
  3. Inoculate the substrate.
    • Sterilize your jars or bags.
    • Inject spores into the substrate.
    • Keep everything clean to avoid contamination.
  4. Wait for colonization.
    • Keep jars or tubs at around 75–81°F (24–27°C).
    • In 2 to 3 weeks, the white mycelium should fully take over.
  5. Move to fruiting.
    • Once colonized, move to a fruiting setup like a monotub or shotgun fruiting chamber.
    • Drop temps to 70–75°F (21–24°C) and boost humidity to 90–95%.
    • Give them 12 hours of light per day.
  6. Wait for pins, then harvest.
    • Tiny mushrooms (pins) will appear in about a week.
    • Harvest when the caps are fully open but before they flatten out.
  7. Get ready for more.
    • Mist lightly and maintain humidity.
    • B+ often gives multiple flushes, and the second and third ones are usually even bigger.

It’s a low-stress grow if you keep things clean and don’t rush it. B+ gives solid results, even if it’s your first time.

What Should You Know About B+ Spores?

B+ spores are super popular, which makes them easy to find and easy to work with—perfect for beginners.

  1. Are they easy to find online?
Yes. B+ spores are sold by almost every spore vendor out there. You can buy them in syringes, prints, or pre-loaded kits, depending on what setup you’re going for. Just make sure you’re buying from a reputable seller with good reviews. And check your local laws—spores are legal to buy in most U.S. states for microscopy use, but banned in a few like California, Idaho, and Georgia.
  2. Do they colonize quickly?
Compared to other strains, yes. B+ spores are known to colonize fast and handle contamination well, which is a big reason why people recommend them for first-time growers. Under the right conditions, you’ll see solid growth within a few days, and full colonization in about 2 to 3 weeks.
  3. Can you use them in any setup?
Pretty much. B+ spores work with PF Tek, monotubs, grow bags, and other common setups. They’re not picky about substrate, and they adapt well to different environments. Whether you’re doing a small jar, grow or a full tub, B+ spores can handle it.

Bottom line—B+ spores are easy to find, easy to use, and tough enough to give you a good shot at successful growth, even if it’s your first time.

Should You Try B+ or Pick Another Strain?

B+ is perfect for beginners. It’s easy to grow, handles contamination well, and doesn’t need much to thrive.

If you’re growing mushrooms for the first time and want something that gives a solid trip without being overwhelming, B+ is a great pick. It also grows big, flushes well, and works with pretty much any setup.

When is it not the right choice?

If you’re after a really strong, mind-bending experience, B+ might feel a little mild. It’s not weak, but it doesn’t hit like strains such as Penis Envy or Tidal Wave. If you’ve already tried a few strains and want something more intense, you might want to level up.

What are some better options if not B+?

If B+ feels too soft or you want a different kind of experience, here are a few other strains worth checking out:

  • Penis Envy – Super potent and not recommended for beginners
  • Tidal Wave – Hits harder, often with strong visuals
  • Trinity Mushroom – A balanced but more intense trip
  • Golden Teacher – Another beginner-friendly option, more mellow than B+

Conclusion

So, is B+ strong—or just popular? The truth is, it’s a little of both.

It might not be the most powerful strain out there, but it gives a good trip, especially for first-timers. It’s easy to grow, produces big fruits, and doesn’t require a lab setup to get it right.

It may not be the flashiest or strongest, but there’s a reason B+ is still one of the most talked-about strains today. It works, it’s simple, and for a lot of people, that’s more than enough.
